Zach Ford asked:

Living with bad credit can be stressful, embarrassing, and cost you thousands of dollars, fortunately there is help available for people with less than perfect credit histories. There are even many steps you can take on your own towards improving your credit score and credit report. You may have made some mistakes in the past, but everyone deserves a second chance!

Request a Free Credit Report

The United States Federal Trade Commission requires that the three major national credit reporting agencies provide you with a totally free copy of your credit report, when requested, up to once a year. Your credit report consists of a detailed history of past financial activities, loans, credit cards, utility bills, etc. and whether you have made payments to them on time. These reports are maintained by three main agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

The main benefit of requesting a free credit report is that you can check your report for any harmful errors. Credit report errors are usually caused by identity theft, fraud, and mistakes made by the agencies themselves. Also, some information may remain on your credit report longer than it is supposed to, harming your overall credit score. Any of these errors can be reported to the credit agency and corrected.

Talk to a Credit Repair Agency

If, after checking over your credit report, you find that you are still suffering from a poor credit score, you may also consider contacting a credit repair company and requesting a free credit consultation. A good credit repair professionals will know a variety of tricks and tips that can help you boost your overall credit score. They may also be able to make suggestions about things such as debt consolidation and how to maintain your credit score once it has been improved.

A good credit repair agency will leave you with a plan for the future, which you can closely follow to avoid making any future mistakes, which may harm your credit score. The more you know about your credit the more informed your financial decisions will become.

Karl

Johnny Tebowr asked:

How Can I Fix My Credit Score?

Many, many folks have found that their credit scores are less-than-appealing – especially in such a weak economy with so many layoffs and company restructuring efforts that have left tons of people jobless. Regrettably, it is a heck of a lot easier to lower your credit score than it is to increase it. Credit scores are measured on the Fair Isaac and Co scale or FICO with the majority of lenders. Your FICO score is used to determine your creditworthiness or lack thereof. This score is compiled based on information that is reported about you and your borrowing habits to the three major credit reporting bureaus (Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax). Having a bad or damaged credit file makes your FICO score lower, which results in everything from denial of credit to denial of employment. Let’s look at ways that you can increase this all important FICO score:

“Fix My Credit Score” Tip #1: Verify the Accuracy of Your Credit Report

It is crucial that the information being used to calculate your credit score is factual and up-to-date. All three of the above-mentioned bureaus may have a different accounting of your borrowing behavior, so it is important that you pull your credit report and score from each one. You can receive a free copy of your credit report once each year under federal law; you will be charged for your score, however. Look your three reports over carefully. Can you dispute any of the information that is contained in your credit file? Do you recognize any discrepancies and errors? Even simple items like a late payment that you actually made on time should be reported and disputed to the bureau holding the erroneous record. In many instances, the creditor will need to prove that a debt is valid in order for it to remain on file. Also keep an eye out for duplicate reports of the same negative item – this is a common mistake that occurs when debt is “sold” to collection agencies who may resell the debt to other companies.

“Fix My Credit Score” Tip #2: Make Timely Payments

The most important thing that you can do to be regarded as a responsible borrower (and to keep your credit score looking good) is to make timely payments. Thirty-five percent of your FICO score is based on your payment history (yes, more than a third). Pay on time, each and every time that your payments are due.

“Fix My Credit Score” Tip #3: Pay Down Debt

A whopping thirty percent of your FICO score is based on the amount you owe. A simple fix that can raise your credit score: pay down your credit cards and other installment-type loans. This doesn’t mean moving the debt from one card to another, but actually eliminating it. Make small steps – like an extra $50 per month, if you cannot afford to pay a big chunk of your debt off at once.

“Fix My Credit Score” Tip #4: Keep Your Oldest Accounts Open

One of the biggest mistakes that can be made in regards to credit is closing old accounts. Newer accounts lower your score; older accounts raise the “average length” of your credit history – which is a good thing. Keep your older accounts in good standing, and don’t run more than a thirty percent balance on them as compared to the available credit you have. For example, if your Visa card has a $10,000 limit, run no greater than a 30% balance on the card at any time.

Joe

Steven Anna asked:

When it’s time to fix your credit score, there are two options: you can spend the time to learn the requisite aspects of the credit reporting business, or you can utilize a professional credit repair service. There are benefits to taking either path.

Option one is repairing your own credit. The big benefit of repairing your own credit is that the financial cost is minimal. Most people find the credit repair process daunting and confusing, but once you understand how it all works, it is certainly possible to go it alone. One thing to keep in mind is that fixing your credit score on your own will probably be a time consuming undertaking.

The first step of the process is obtaining your reports from the three primary credit bureaus; Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax. You will notice right away that the reports do not match; that’s because each company has their own set of reporting standards. This is why it is critical to obtain credit reports from all three of the bureaus. Review and compare the three reports, and make a list of all the inaccurate items.

The next step is to write letters to each of the credit bureaus to dispute each of the erroneous entries. Note that you need to write a separate letter for each specific item that you are disputing to each bureau that lists that particular account.

Within a month you should receive a letter back from the applicable credit bureau with a disposition for your dispute. Follow up with each applicable bureau until all of the erroneous data has been corrected.

Option two is to utilize a professional credit repair company to help you fix your credit score. Credit repair companies can help you fix your credit score fast because they have an intimate knowledge of exactly what actions influence credit score and by how many points.

A good credit repair company also has direct contacts that they deal with regularly at the credit bureaus which is certainly going to quicken the pace of the action. Depending on your circumstances, it is possible to increase your credit score as much as 200 points in a matter of weeks. The downside is that you have to pay them for their service.

The bottom line is that whether you choose to hire a credit repair company, or you decide to go it alone depends on if you would rather spend the time to do it yourself or spend the money to hire an expert… just like most things in life.

Ricardo

Edmund Roberts asked:

How to fix credit is something that takes time and patience to do, especially if the damage was made lately. There are several methods to improve your score and boost your capability to make an application for future financial aid, but these can be dreary and long.

To start the credit repair you will need a copy of the reports from all three consumer reporting agencies TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Compare all of the reports and ensure that all of the information they contain are correct. Some creditors only report to one agency, which can cause discrepancies. Also, there have been instances where closed accounts are continuing to be reported open and paid off debts are still showing as unpaid. Make sure to correct these mistakes right away by calling the consumer reporting agencies and explaining the situation. You may also must contact the creditors who made the report to send an update to clear up the inaccuracies.

The following step is to get shot of too much debt. Make sure to get shot of all most of your unsecured debt either by paying it off or consolidating it. Too much debt can be viewed as a negative and is an element when it comes to working out your score. Close out all the extra charge cards and store cards and only keep two ideally a Visa and a credit card, to be sure that you’ll have access to funds when you want it. Keep the accounts that have been open the longest because this may have a positive result on your credit score. Don’t close out all of the other accounts at the same time. Attempt to close only one or two accounts every six months to give your score time to adjust.

The best way to guarantee the mend is to be certain that you do not have delinquent payments or suffer an overdraft arrangement on any of your loans. Financial establishments report these to the buyer reporting agencies, who in turn put it in your credit history. There’s a thirty day, 60 day, and ninety day class on skipped payments, and having one of this may cause your score to take a sudden dip.

Finally, to learn how to fix credit ensure that your info is being correctly reported. Your FICO score is based upon the quantity of debt you have vs the quantity of credit you have available. Some charge cards report your highest balance rather than your limit, so if the highest balance youve sustained is $400 out of a $500 charge card and you charge $450 the month after next, it may look like you went over the limit. Confirm never to charge more than fifty percent of your limit to show you’re not spending more than you can afford to.

Credit history mend is a long-term process, particularly since some of the negative feedback will take seven to ten years to fall off. One thing you will need to recollect is not to borrow more than you can afford to pay back and to make sure that your accounts are all up to date. After all, even though the fix can take ages, it’ll still provide advantage to you in the longer term.

Sam

Judy Meeks asked:

Would you like to know how to fix your credit score?

There are many reasons why you may want to fix your credit rating. You may want to buy a house, buy a car, or get a credit card. Even just renting a nice house nowadays requires a good credit rating. So how does one go about improving these numbers that can have such a powerful impact on our lives?

1. First you will need to get a copy of your credit report. There are many free places you can get a free credit report online such as Equifax.com. Make sure you check your report for any errors. If you have any disputes file a dispute with the credit bureaus. Pay off any bad debts making sure to pay off your high interest debts first.

2. Start paying your bills on time. If you do not pay your bills on time this causes a negative impact on your credit rating. Paying bills on time can help increase those three numbers. Start an emergency fund so you do not use your bill money to pay for emergencies. Some financial advisers suggest taking each paycheck and dividing it 3 ways. One third for bills, one third for emergencies, and one third for other expenses. Of course sometimes we have to put more towards the bills than the other two but try to save up for that rainy day if you can.

3. Get a prepaid credit card and make regular payments. They will report this to the credit bureaus, which will help those three numbers go up over time.

Unfortunately there is no magic button to push that will automatically give you a perfect score. There are credit debt services that will help you fix your credit score but you have to be careful. Some credit debt services claim to be able to clear up your score but wind up costing you a lot more money or are involved in illegal activities.

Mitchell

Herb Wills asked:

The first step in fixing your credit score is to obtain a copy of your personal report from each of the three major national credit bureaus, and review each one for mistakes or false information. These days most creditors across the country do report their information to all three major agencies: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Each bureau operates independently and does not share information… so one report can be different from another.

There are times that reporting agencies may have bad information about you and this will have a great impact when financing institutions give their final decisions on your application

If information on any of the reports is truly false, then the process to fix a person’s score can be quicker. Any information on a report that is wrong should be reported directly to the credit bureau. As an alternative and safeguard, it would be good that you also try to straighten out issues with the financing institution who gave the wrong information. If you are curious about what may be lurking on your credit report, such as false information, it’s vitally important you get report as soon as possible.

Review all of the information in your credit report carefully. Credit rating agencies have been known to make mistakes sometime, and although it’s statistically unlikely to happen to you, it doesn’t hurt to check.

If you’ve been denied credit you have 60 days to request a free report from the bureau who reported the negative information. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows a consumer to challenge the information on his report on the basis of “completeness and accuracy. ” If, after a reinvestigation by the bureau, the disputed information “is found to be inaccurate or can no longer be verified, the [credit bureau] shall promptly delete such information.

Thousands of consumers just like yourself have improved their rating score or are in the process of doing so by fixing erroneous and/or negative information on their reports. It’s important to remember that a reporting agency can report negative information for seven years.

If you are looking around the internet to get someone to repair your credit or perhaps you are thinking about doing it yourself, be careful of the numerous impostor sites out there trying to steal your information. There is a lot of good information there that tells you what’s in your score, how bad credit affects it and what to do to increase your score. But, there are many agencies under investigation for scams. Doing it yourself gives you complete control, eliminating the possibility of being scammed, while saving you money to boot. If you are young you have plenty of time to repair the damage.

Some suggestions how to Fix Your Credit Score:

Demonstrating your credit worthiness with a bill payment history is one of the smartest financial moves that you can make. To get rid of this stress you must take positive action and change your attitude toward money so you can fix your credit-rating. Immediately pay off the balance of the cards every month to have a good rating. Keeping your inquiries to a minimum may help your rating whenever you request a new credit card.

Tanya

Mark J Garcia asked:

The Credit Bureaus exist for one reason, and one reason only…to make money! Each and every one of the bureaus is a publicly traded company. They make most of their revenue by selling information to lending institutions, insurance companies, utility companies, credit card issuing banks, and employers.

They DO NOT make money by researching your disputes…in fact, it costs them time, money, and resources to investigate them. Is it any wonder then who the bureaus ultimately serve?

Bureau Secret #1 Credit Bureau Reports – Your 92 Scores

Reports and scores are created “on the fly” whenever they are requested by you, a creditor, or a lender. In fact, you can have up to 92 different scores…23 different scores for each Bureau: Trans Union, Experian, Equifax and don’t forget the little known “other” bureau named Innovis.

Remember your credit scores can vary drastically depending on who pulls the report and the particular profile applied to you. This Bureau process is especially problematic if you are thinking of getting a home loan or mortgage. The score you see if you request it from a major reporting bureau or an on-line service WILL be different – and probably much higher than the score you receive from a Mortgage Broker.

Why?

One reason is that when you pull a report from an online service 18 elements of identification have to match exactly. For example, all of the letters of your last name need to match. That means you are more likely to get accurate information.

When the bureaus pull reports for lenders, usually only 9 elements have to match, for example only 2 letters in your last name. So, more errors and erroneous information will appear on your score – lowering it. Why do the Bureaus provide different – and LOWER – scores to lenders?

Because they’ve decided that by reporting lower – more conservative scores to lenders, they would be less likely to be sued by lenders if the borrower defaults on the loan.

Do you think the major reporting bureaus care about showing lenders your true credit worthiness? I am here to tell you that they don’t! Matter of fact, if you would like to find out more information about how the bureaus are royally screwing over the American Consumer, I have created a newsletter that details shocking news about the 3 Major Bureaus

Bureau Secret #2 Credit Bureau Reports – Your Scores are NOT Accurate

Did you know that your score is probably inaccurate? According to a recent Public Interest Group Research study, more than 70% of Reports contain errors. Oh sure, the Bureaus say to the public that only 20% of reports contain errors, but that’s a bunch of Bureau bologna, because when they are in court under oath they admit that more than 50% of reports contain errors.

What kind of errors are probably on your report – and making you pay more for your home, auto loan, insurance, credit cards and student loans? The study found that 29% of reports contain serious errors that don’t belong including; false delinquencies that can kill your score.

41% of reports contain personal demographic information that was incorrect, outdated, or misspelled. 20% of credit reports – 1 in 5!!!! were missing major loan mortgage or other information to demonstrate the worthiness of the consumer. 26% of reports contained accounts that were in incorrectly listed as open (or) “closed by credit grantor.” When your account is “closed by grantor” it looks like you did something wrong and that’s bad for your scores.
Bureau Secret #3 What Is Your Real, Accurate, and True FICO Score?

Did you know that over 90% of the financial institutions in the world will use scores from one organization only? The name of that company is Fair Isaac Corporation or as they are more commonly known FICO.

The location where I recommend that you purchase your credit scores from is from the Fair Isaac Corporation at their main website. Now, I recommend going to a certain section of their website where you will get a true picture of why your scores are behaving the way they are

This website will not only give you the most current status of your reports, but it will also show you your FICO Scores from all 3 bureaus.

This is the only place you should ever get your scores, because your FICO scores are the ones from where most lenders will base their acceptance of your credit application.

I find it interesting that the major bureaus also have their own version of scores that they try to sell to you and I. However none of the people you are trying to get to extend you a loan will even look at those scores! It is just another example of the greedy bureaus trying to squeeze more and more money from us.

Let’s Wrap This Up…

So as you can see, there are many myths disguised as truths when it comes to credit and credit repair. There are also hidden secrets that the credit bureaus don’t want you to know. I hope that since you are now armed with this knowledge, you won’t fall victim to false information that exists out there.

Your Credit Score Insider, Mark J. Garcia

Tyler

Lyn Collier asked:

You don’t have to sign up for a trial membership of a credit protection service to get free copies of your credit reports. There a few one-stop websites where you can order credit reports from all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. It’s easy. One site, Annual Credit Report, is even recommended by Consumer advocate Clark Howard as well as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

By the way, your “credit report” is not the same thing as your “credit score.” The reports will give your credit activity only – not your FICO score. The FICO score is a number that is generated using info from all three agencies. It is a product of Fair Isaac Credit Org. (FICO) and must be purchased – $15.95

When you get to the site and start clicking around to request your free report, a few things might concern you. The main thing…and it is kind of unavoidable is the request for you to enter your Social Security number. If you have strong reservations about entering your SS number online, you can just skip the rest of the article and look up the 800 number and do the transaction on the phone. But either way, you will to have to provide your social security number.

Back to the online request. At some point during your online request for a free credit report , each bureau will try to sell you their products. Stay focused.

Here is the protocol for Experian for example: (and they are all pretty much alike so I will spare you the details on the other 2)

Step 1 on the Experian site will offer to sell you your Experian credit score for $5.95. Each bureau assigns a score, but their scores do not represent your FICO score. The FICO score is the one that most creditors use. I don’t recommend buying a credit score from anyone other than FICO. it’s the only one that counts. When asked if you want to purchase your “Experian” score, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “No thanks, I just want my free annual credit report.”

You will cruise through the steps pretty quickly. The only time you might have a problem is if you don’t answer the identification verification questions correctly. If you answer incorrectly you will be given a toll-free number to call where your i.d. can be verified manually.

Once you are done on the Experian site, you will be prompted to return to the Annual Credit Report site and continue with the other credit bureaus.

All the sites will walk you through the same process offering to sell you their products along the way. Remember, your goal is to get free credit reports, not buy stuff. Follow the prompts and you will instantly get your three credit reports free of charge.

Allan

Tony Banks asked:

Your Equifax credit score is probably the most popular of the three main credit bureaus. The other two are Transunion and Experian. Some lenders look at all three scores when making a decision to approve you for a loan but working on one score usually affects the others as well.

The strategy to boost your Equifax score will depend on the current state of your credit report. If your credit report has a few recent negative items such as charge-offs and collection accounts you want to challenge these items with the credit bureaus to have them deleted from your reports.

The more recent a negative is on your report, the more damage it will do to your scores. If a challenge is unsuccessful you can take another approach. This would be to deal directly with the creditor or collection agency. Just about all collection agencies have one main purpose which is to get paid.

Third party collection agencies usually buy the debt from the original creditor at a fraction of what the original price which means that you can negotiate a lesser amount to pay them to settle the debt. REMEMBER that you are doing this to boost your credit scores so in exchange for coming to an agreement with them you will ask them to delete their entry on your credit report.

On the other hand, if you have a fairly okay credit score and you want to boost it, your approach would be to strength the credit that you already have which can be done by paying down high balances on your credit cards as well as opening a new credit account to add to your available credit IF you don’t already have too many credit cards or revolving accounts.

Rosa
